Straightforward enough in most states. California adds a few extra ways to get it wrong.
Because Italy and the US both belong to the Hague Apostille Convention, an apostille from the California Secretary of State is what tells Italian consulates (Los Angeles and San Francisco both handle California filings), courts, and Comuni that your document's seal and signature are legitimate. Get the wrong version of the document, or send it to the wrong office, and you're not looking at a quick fix. The Three Ways California Birth Certificates Get Rejected
The Health Officer signature trap. Some California birth certificates are signed by a County Health Officer rather than a County Recorder or the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). These can't go straight to apostille. They need an extra layer of county clerk signature verification first, something most people don't find out until their application is already rejected.
"Informational" copies don't qualify. California issues both "Authorized" and "Informational" certified copies. Only the Authorized version is eligible for an apostille. If you ordered your birth certificate without specifying which type you needed, there's a real chance you're holding one that can't be used for this at all.
