Georgia Apostille

Georgia apostilles are issued by the Georgia Superior Court Clerks' Cooperative Authority (GSCCCA) in Atlanta, not by the Secretary of State. An apostille certifies the signature and seal of the official who signed your document, so a foreign government will accept it. Georgia is one of the faster states: mail requests are usually processed in 1 to 2 business days.

Which Georgia documents can be apostilled

The document must be an original issued in Georgia.

  • Birth and death certificates certified by the state vital records office, a county probate court or a county health department

  • Marriage certificates from the county probate court

  • Divorce decrees and other court records certified by the county Clerk of Superior Court

  • Corporate records certified by the Georgia Secretary of State

  • Documents notarized by a Georgia notary, such as powers of attorney and affidavits. Georgia does not require a county clerk step first.

  • Transcripts signed by a Georgia school official in front of a notary, and diplomas with a notarized copy certification

What gets Georgia documents rejected

  • Old vital records. Georgia may not have older officials' signatures on file and recommends a new certified copy for anything issued before 2000.

  • Plain photocopies. A copy only qualifies if a Georgia notary has certified it.

  • Notarization errors: a missing date, a signature that doesn't match the notary's commission, or a seal that is unclear or missing required details.

  • A translation where the translator also notarized their own affidavit.

  • Federal documents, including FBI background checks and consular reports of birth abroad. These go to the US Department of State.

  • A destination country outside the Hague Convention. GSCCCA can't help with those.

How it works with us

  1. Send us your document, or tell us what you have and we'll tell you what to order.

  2. We check the certification or notarization against Georgia's rules before filing.

  3. We file with the GSCCCA in Atlanta. Most state apostilles come back in 3 to 5 business days.

  4. We return it by FedEx Priority, shipping included, anywhere in the world. You pay after the apostille is complete.

Georgia apostille FAQ

Does the Georgia Secretary of State issue apostilles?

No. Apostilles come from the GSCCCA. The Secretary of State issues a different certificate, the Great Seal certification, for countries outside the Hague Convention.

My Georgia birth certificate is from the 1990s. Will it work?

Possibly, but Georgia recommends a newly issued certified copy for anything issued before 2000, because older signatures may not be on file. Ordering a new one up front avoids a rejection.

My country isn't in the Hague Convention. What then?

You need a Great Seal certification from the Georgia Secretary of State, followed by embassy legalization. See our embassy legalization page.
